Standard Bank Art Lab invites the public to a series of activations – “The Blue Thread: Material & Method Lab”

Standard Bank is proud to announce the launch of its first public-facing programme at the Standard Bank Art Lab, the bank’s new creative visual arts space in Nelson Mandela Square. True to the promise made at its opening, the Art Lab now comes alive with a series of multidisciplinary activations designed to bring people, ideas and culture together in one space.

Titled “The Blue Thread: Material & Method Lab”, this first series of events invites the public to experience art in a more interactive and personal way. From weaving and embroidery to music, storytelling and children’s programming, each activation is a chance to engage with artists and their practices up close.

Dr Same Mdluli, Standard Bank Curator and Gallery Manager, says: “Since launching the Art Lab in June, we’ve witnessed a positive response and growing interest in the space. It’s allowed the public visiting the mall to engage with and access the arts with ease.. We view the space as one for experimentation, research, and public engagement, grounded in the belief that art and innovation are not opposing forces, but deeply interconnected.

All the upcoming events will continue to foster this spirit, presenting art in a unique and accessible way.”

The series kicked off on Friday, 25 July, when textile designer and storyteller, Nkuli Mlangeni hosted the first hands-on weaving workshop which saw participants creating their own pieces to take home. The workshop was titled, “Woven Acts: A weaving workshop with Nkuli Mlangeni of The Ninevites”.

As the founder of The Ninevites, Nkuli brings African traditions and contemporary design together in a way that honours heritage while exploring new ideas.

Here’s what’s coming up August:
