Adidas Partners With Track+Field
Global apparel company Adidas has joined the latest evolution in South African schools athletics as a partner to the track+field series.
Adidas has a long and storied association with athletics in South Africa, which includes the support of some of the country’s most recognisable stars, such as Wayde van Niekerk, Akani Simbine and Jo-Ané du Plessis (formerly Van Dyk).
As the technical partner to the track+field Series, Adidas is showing its commitment to discovering and nurturing South Africa’s future athletics talent.
“It all starts with school sports and we’re excited to be partnering with the track+field Series,” Kane Reilly, Sports Marketing Running and Outdoor Sports at Adidas. “South Africa has so much talent and it’s initiatives like this that will help foster the next Akani Simbine and Jo-Ané du Plessis.”
A collaboration between SuperSport, Athletics South Africa, and SA Schools Athletics, the track+field Series will involve the top high school athletes from around the country.
To grow the sport, the series is open to all the schools in each of the nine provinces where they will compete in a knockout format. The competition will culminate in the Grand Final where the nine regional champions will compete to be crowned the top track and field school in South Africa.
SuperSport chief executive, Rendani Ramovha, said: “SuperSport is Africa’s premier sports broadcaster, producing and broadcasting local and international sport, and we are the biggest funder of sports in Africa.
“As part of that investment in growing sport, we are excited to be part of the boldest youth sports competition in South Africa, which is track+field. The schools competition is set to transform the sport of athletics for many current and future generations. We are proud to have partnered with Athletics South Africa, Sub 10 and SA Schools Athletics.”
Each team will consist of 20 boys and girls across under-15, -17, and -19 age groups, where every point counts towards crowning the regional and overall track+field champions. The competition will follow in the wake of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where some of the country’s best age-group talents made the step up to the major leagues.
Chief among these performers were Bradley Nkoana and Bayanda Walaza, who were teenagers when they clinched the silver medal as members of the men’s 4x100m relay team. Simbine anchored the team onto the podium winning the country’s first-ever medal in the event at the Olympics.
Each of the 10 meetings – including the Grand Final – will be broadcast live on SuperSport adding to the growing athletics bouquet on your World of Champions.
