Red Carpet Recap: Why Jewellery Was the Real Star at the Met

One of fashion’s biggest nights in Hollywood finally arrived last Monday night as the who’s who in the film and entertainment industry walked down the red carpet. Besides the fanfare about who was the best and worst dressed, the night also offers a glimpse of fashion trends.

Undoubtedly, the Met Gala had millions of fashion enthusiasts watching to see how guests would interpret the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style theme.

From Janelle Monae’s oversized trompe l’oeil suit cape to Zendaya’s tailored white suit. If you looked more closely, you’d see that accessories were the second star of the show on the red carpet. From smaller jewellery pieces to Swarovski’s swan-like feather-inspired custom jewelry collar necklace.

This year’s Met Gala was a forecast of the fashion trends, and the verdict is clear as day: jewellery is the new statement piece.

As to what Swarovski’s approach was for the Met Gala, Giovanna Engelbert, Swarovski’s creative director, said that she saw “each garment as a canvas – creating colourful, artistic representations of swan feathers in combination with crystal and world class tailoring to bring the same level of artistry and creativity to each look that we bring to our jewellery, and to capture the elegance and extravagance of this important moment in fashion pop culture”.

The special thing with jewellery is that – depending on the right attire and the type of jewellery worn – it takes an outfit from dull to extravagant. For instance, Alex Consani wore a sweeping, hand-crafted, sculptural necklace, inspired by the Vienna Collection, made of 18,400 crystals seamlessly integrated into the tailoring of the jacket.

Another underrated way to transform a look is ear cuffs. Sora Choi wore a blue formal dress coat that transitioned into a balletic, swan-like skirt. To accessorize, she wore ear cuffs from the Vienna Collection and unique, showpiece swan rings inspired by the Vienna swan ear cuffs.

For something simple yet equally stylish, brooches are a go-to accessory. They’re versatile and can be worn by anyone. At the Met Gala, actors Jeffery Goldblum and Andrew Scott accessorized their looks with Swarovski brooches.

Even though, the glitz and glam from the Met has come and gone, we can all take some notes from Hollywood’s superstars on what’s fashionable and how to make our outfits a little more interesting.
