Nelson Mandela Day is a significant occasion that reminds us to always reflect on the legacy of Madiba by cementing a culture of volunteerism daily. In the true spirit of giving, the NetFlorist Bunch, media, bloggers and influencers joined forces to prepare lunch packs for the many who help us when we least expect, but who usually go unnoticed. These lunch packs were prepared for delivery to car guards, OUTsurance pointsmen, active job seekers who stand on the side of the road looking for plumbing, tiling, gardening and other temp jobs, security guards, newspaper vendors as well as those who make a living by selling artwork.
At his 90th birthday celebration in London’s Hyde Park in 2008, Mandela said, “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.” He would be celebrating his 101st birthday today and NetFlorist joined in to participate while recognising Mandela’s dedication to the service of humanity.

The bloggers and influencers who joined the lunch pack drive for Mandela Day are DJ Fresh, Maps Maponyane, Ntokozo Mbambo, Shaney Vijendranath, who blogs at You, Baby and I; Sello Ramosepele , Editor of Braam Vibes; Yamkela Mdaka, a journalist; Khanya Nkosi who blogs at Divinely Kay; actress, Hayley Owen Watters; Mira Naidu, who blogs at Real Life Mum and your's truly.
Each lunch pack contained a T-shirt, socks, dried fruit, an apple, a sandwich, a muffin, a cupcake and another sweet treat. Suppliers such as MultiSnack and The Nut Lady also chipped in to sponsor some of the goodies that went into the lunch packs.
All South Africans need to create a ‘67 lifestyle’, in which we get involved in community projects and make everyday a Mandela Day. The ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better lies on all humankind.
“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same” – Nelson Mandela
