The year 2018, marks the centenary year of Nelson Mandela’s birth - Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in the village of Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape, on 18 July 1918. The Nelson Mandela Foundation is commemorating Madiba’s centenary under the theme entire “Be the Legacy”, a call to action for all citizens of the world to live the values of Madiba.
As part of celebrating the centenary, Philips partnered with the Nelson Mandela Foundation for the Shave To Remember campaign to give us one of the awesome things that we can do to honour and remember Madiba’s legacy.
To be honest, one of the things I struggle with concerning campaigns, is how to show my contribution. I find it pretty cool that we can shave a line through our hair – so convenient, so clean, so stylish and super trendy! What fulfils me even more is that more women are getting into short, natural hair – so getting a shave will not be a hassle. Everyone can participate.

NMF and Philips hosted an event on the 30th of July at Mary Fitzgerald Square were people could come, free of charge – super cool – to get their free iconic haircut. Attendees were given free Wi-Fi to share their experience on the socials and stood a chance to win NMF hampers which included the Philips clippers and Nelson Mandela branded goodies. Guests were hosted by the gorgeous Ms Cosmo, were entertained by Reason HD, Major Leauge DJz as well as the world-class electrifying, afro-fusion drummers SilverBlack.
If you’re wondering, why the line … well Sello Hatang, Chief Executive of the Foundation explained, “The path that Madiba wore on his hair represents a long road that he walked, but more importantly, signifies the distance that still lies ahead for all of us that are left behind to continue the journey of freedom, peace and equality.”
Even more, for those that will be purchasing the Philips Clipper, a percentage of the proceedings will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation as part of your contribution to making the world a better place. How super cool is that?!
I guess whether it is kindness, a deep concern for the people around them, a quiet inner-strength, a brilliant mind that thinks deeply, or softly-spoken compassion – the campaign calls on everyone to honour their truth in remembrance of a home grown, global icon.
